5 OF THE BEST VEGETARIAN BRUNCHES IN SINGAPORE

I’ve never been drawn to meals striving to replicate Picasso’s paintbrush strokes on a plate. There’s no question food is a form of art, yet, finding a restaurant in Singapore that serves simplicity, comfort, value for money, quality and good service, is almost as complex as an avant-garde, surrealist structure. 

 

Making use of my long-lasting passion for food, as well as my chef’s background, while out and about exploring the Lion City, I found some standout meals, yet casual, worth sharing with you. Here is a list of my top 5 favourite  brunches in the tropical capital.

 

 

1. Turkish Common Man Breakfast  

   Common Man Coffee Roasters, River Valley

 

 

I’ve been a loyal fan of Common Man since moving to Singapore, in 2013. Their food is consistently delicious, fresh, well priced (for the size of the portions), and their service is equally superb. This dish reminds me of a cozy bird’s nest. A crispy phyllo-wrapped egg is loaded with warm feta cheese, sliced tomatoes, olives, cucumber, hummus, rocket, and triangles of piping hot pita bread. To add, Common Man’s staff is ever so accommodating with any menu change requests.

 

 

2. Truffled eggs with spinach and portobello mushroom

     Forty Hands, Tiong Bahru

 

 

If this dish wasn’t served with toasted pepita (pumpkin seed) bread, one would most likely need to use finger tips in order to lick the last drops of truffle mushroom puree stuck to the corners of the bowl. Truffle oil’s natural richness makes this a perfect dish for a weekend treat. 

 

3. Common Man Veggie Wonderland

There’s something about the rustic ceramic plates and tea pots Common Man serve their food and drinks in that makes the whole vibe ever more earthy and organic. This was one of the first dishes I tried, and have been going back countless times for more. The veggies are well-seasoned, well-cooked, and the chili flakes sprinkled on the fresh avocado is the cherry on top of the cake.

 

 

4. Warm Kale, tofu and pumpkin salad

    Forty Hands, Tiong Bahru

 

 

 

In South America, rice, veggies and protein are daily staples, and this dish reminds me of the comfort of an authentic home-cooked meal. The tangy, garlic and citrus dressing is a perfect match for the sweet grilled pumpkin, crispy tempeh, fried tofu, crunchy broccoli and sautéed kale.

 

 

5. Smashed avocado with feta, chili and pesto

Grounded by CMCR, River Valley 

 

For an avocado lover like me, this dish is the synonymous with heaven. The creamy green goodness is tossed with a perfect amount of garlic and olive oil, then spread on toasted sourdough, followed by nutty flavoured sesame and roasted pumpkin seeds. The basil oil drizzled on top add yet another layer of bliss.
